This charcoal forms part of a series of landscape paintings and drawings Creffield produced during the summer of 1954. The location is Charing Heath in Kent where his maternal grandmother lived. The works he produced of the orchard fields represented a stylistic evolution from his previous work as he began to develop his own voice as an artist. The paintings were kept private for many years and only released for exhibition at the very end of his life.
