Dennis Creffield’s studio overlooked the Channel in Brighton. He had a table in front of a huge window and he would often pile up objects, sometimes flowers, other times different subjects – to paint still lifes. Creffield wanted to paint his own encounter with the objects – and his intensity meets their intensity, as it does in this glorious painting. Less nature morte than nature vivante.
