The Arts Council commission, awarded in 1985, to draw all of England’s medieval cathedrals resulted in a touring exhibition of 14 public galleries over a two-year period. The exposure this gave Creffield turned him from being ‘one of England’s closely guarded secrets’ (as described by R.B. Kitaj) into one of England’s most revered figurative artists. Writing in the supporting exhibition catalogue, Creffield declared that “The scissor crossing at Wells is one of the great wonders of medieval art.” The drawing is also represented by a full-page illustration in the same catalogue.
